This pack includes a comprehensive plan to encourage personal writing by thinking about appearance, best qualities, worst qualities and plans and ambitions. It also includes a model essay to illustrate good practice (which has been annotated to show effective word choices, imagery and punctuation). This resource could be used for younger secondary school students or could assist with National 5 folio- particularly in students who have missed class time (folio recovery).

This power point will take pupils through the structure of a Critical Essay on ‘A Hanging’ by George Orwell. The essay follows a PEER structure and offers examples. It tackles the following question: Choose a non-fiction text which made you think about a social issue. Explain briefly what that issue is and at greater length show how the writer’s treatment of the issue conveyed her or his point of view. In your answer you must refer closely to the text and to at least two of: setting, theme, style, descriptive detail, or any other relevant feature. This resource is ideal for use with a National 5, GCSE, AS Level, or Higher English class.
